Danda Nacha Danda Nata or Danda Jatra (Odia: ଦଣ୍ଡ ନାଟ, ଦଣ୍ଡ ଯାତ୍ରା)is one of the most important traditional dance festivals organized in different parts of South Odisha and particularly in the Ganjam District, the heartland of ancient Kalinga Empire. The Danda Nata festival is being held in the month of Chaitra of every year. As per Ram Prasad Tripathy's article, it is an ancient festival of the Kalinga kingdom and still alive in and around the ancient Kalinga capital Sampa/Samapa i.e modern day Ganjam District. The Participants of Danda are called Danduas (also known as Bhoktas) and they pray Goddesses Kali and Shiva during this 13-, 18- or 21-day Danda period. Danda begins on an auspicious day before the Chaitra Sankranti or Meru Parba with traditional worship and fasting. The total number of days for the festival is 13, 18 or 21 days. Only male persons take part in this festival. The participants are known as the 'Bhoktas'. All the `Bhoktas` or 'Danduas' lead a very pious life for all these days during the festival and they avoid eating meat, fish or cohabiting during this period. It is believed that the present day Danda Nata is a part of the ancient Chaitra Yatra festivals being celebrated every year at Taratarini Shakti/Tantra Peetha. The Kalinga Emperors organised this Chaitra festival for their Ista devi, Taratarini. As per folk lore, during ancient period after 20 days of Danda practice the Danduas must assemble near Taratarini Shakti/Tantra Peetha (which is ista devi of the Great Kalinga rulers) and with some hard rituals culminate their Danda on the last day. This practice continued for many years and Chaitra Yatra which is still celebrated at Tara Tarini Shakti/Tantra Peetha in the month of Chaitra, is also another part of that old tradition. But later this Danda Nata spread to different parts of Utkala and Koshala. Now the old tradition was changed. Danda Nata groups increased abnormally and the Danduas culminating their Danda in their own villages or locality instead of Taratarini Shakti/Tantra Peetha.

The Kendara is a wooden string instrument. The kendara has one string and is most commonly played by drawing a bow across its string. They are mostly played traditionally by jogis, people who would go from door to door with a dried gourd container to keep rice, and a kendara to play while singing, and accept food as alms.[2] They are rarely used in genres of folk including country music. The folk genre of music played in a kendara is known as kendara gita. The instrument rose to popularity during 12th century when Sanskrit was made the official language of the then Utkala Kingdom but the common people did not understand, but the jogis were performing folk songs. Kendara is often tied to Natha, a particular sect of the jogis that play the most popular variation of kendara. The other variation is known as "majhi kendara" and is played by the Santhal people in Odisha.

Season's folk dance " Danda Nacha " started all over Odisha this month. Local people are excited to enjoy it. With the new technologies, this dance has changed over the old. Most probably it will also be modified in the coming times. Thanks to the people who work hard to preserve the tradition. The start of the program is the " Prava " dance.

" Visit to Kapilash " is always a new experience. I notice many devotees are coming to Kapilash within very short intervals. It is like week end or month end journey. For sure, it is never completed with single visit. Moneys, deer, crocodiles, natural scenery, mountains, forests and the river, all are very pleasant to witness. We pray Lord Chadrashekhar to bless us to come here every now and often. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Danda Nacha Hadi Dance ( 2017 )" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrjP7vvf8to -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Utkal Divas ( ଉତ୍କଳ ଦିବସ ) Odisha Day : 2018 by Dreams2tell
Odisha Day (Odia: ଓଡ଼ିଶା ଦିବସ, also Odisha Dibasa and Utkala Dibasa(Odia: ଉତ୍କଳ ଦିବସ)is celebrated on 1 April in Odisha in the memory of the formation of the state as a separate province on 1 April 1936.[1] [2] After losing its political identity completely in 1568 following the defeat and demise of the last king Mukunda Dev, efforts resulted in the formation of a politically separate state under British rule on a linguistic basis on 1 April 1936. Utkala Dibasa/ Utkala Uschaba is celebrated every year on 1 April all over Odisha. Thousands of shops and Jhankis make this festival more beautiful. There are competitions arranged by popular local politicians like fireworks competition. One can enjoy these fireworks displays which make the sky all the more stunning. On that day all across the country, the family of Odia arranges different cultural programs like a sing-song program, etc. Utkala Dibasa the day of remembrance for all Odia helps everybody to be united.
